Star millennial: Way back in 2017, 17-year-old Californian girl scout Shelby O'Neil wrote to airlines and their CEOs requesting them to use eco-friendly alternatives to plastic straws & other single-use plastics in their flight cutlery inventory - which adds up to 22 million plastic straws annually. She convinced Alaska Airlines to ditch straws and plastic fruit picks starting Summer 2018. It now used only marine-friendly straws.
Shelby has also launched Jr. Ocean Guardians through Girl Scouts USA whereby she gets school kids to do beach cleanup while raising awareness for alternatives to single-use plastics & give them up to keep the oceans plastic free. Here's hoping her actions inspire more people to convince companies to give up single-use plastics and that it spreads internationally.
